Truck drivers is a great career and truck driver employment is expected to grow by as much as 11 percent throughout 2012 to 2022. Companies are always looking for company truck drivers due to a growing demand of goods and a need to keep supply chains going. According to statistics, company drivers held down as much as 1.2 million jobs during 2012.

There are many different types of employment opportunities for someone who is interested in becoming a truck driver. One great option is to become a truck operator, also known as a truck owner.

So what are truck owner / truck operators and what do they do?

Truck operators are drivers who own their own truck or trucking business. Prior to becoming a truck operator, many truck owners have had experience working with a commercial trucking company, but this is not a requirement. As truck operators, they either operate under their own authority or they lease out their services to companies that need to move shipment. Any truck owner who chooses to operate their own authority will need to have a DOT (Department of Transportation and a MC (Motor Carrier) registration number.

When it comes to truck operators, there are two types. One is called a common carrier and the other is a contract carrier. A common carrier is a truck owner who is available to be hired by a broker and shipper. A contract carrier is a truck operator who is hired by a specific company for a set amount of time. While they are hired, they are typically not available to work for any other employer.
